For Color Guard, the music selection is made by
the band director or directors. The Winter
Guard music, however, is chosen by the Color Guard
director or, if you are brave, give your students
a choice of songs to choose from, this way you
know that it is a good song to incorporate
flag and dance and they get to choose the song
that they like.
When choosing music, make sure
it is music that can be counted and divided into
drill sets because let's face it, some music is
just impossible to count. Also, it may be in
your interest to choose music that has "ups" and "downs"
or climactic parts in it
to create a dramatic effect.
It is important to choose
music that you like. Remember, you are going
to be listening to it a bazillion times so make
sure you are willing to hear it over and over and
over and over.
Be open to all forms of music.
If you want to listen to something different but
don't want to spend the money to preview songs.
Take a couple hours and go to your local
bookstore. In the music section, many
bookstore chains have head phones attached to a
scanner. Pick up a couple CD's that look
interesting to you and scan in the bar code. You
should hear selections of the CD. This is a
great way to try new sounds and find the perfect
one for your Winter Guard or
Across the Floors.
