There are three to four basic dance types
incorporated into color guard choreography:
Ballet, Jazz, Modern/Interpretative, and maybe
even some hip-hop.
All of these styles contribute
to color guard in various forms. Some are
more difficult than others because of the level of
control one must have over their body in order to
perform the moves correctly.
The style of the dance you use
should be reflective of the music in your show.
The way I go about choreographing dance is to take
a CD of the music I am going to use and play
sections of it over while I dance/write the moves
that go with each set. I usually
write/choreograph in accordance to the counts in
each drill set. A drill set is the shape
that the color guard and marching band makes on
the field.
As you come up with new dance
moves, be sure to write them down along with how
many counts it takes to do the move so that you
can remember when you teach the dance to your
students. If you are having trouble with dance
moves, go to a local ballet performance, or maybe
ask the high school drill team coach. If
your budget allows, you can hire a free-lance
choreographer or talk to the nearest University
dance professors.
